Welcome to fifth grade! We are sure summer has flown by for you and it’s hard to believe that we are back to school. We have high expectations for students in our classrooms, both in learning and behavior. We feel learning should be fun and interesting. You should be able to think for yourself and share ideas while being respectful of each other.
Throughout the week, your homework assignments may include Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Math, and a Reading Log. Occasionally there may be a Science or Social Studies assignment as well. Homework in Math, Reading, and Writing will count towards your grade, so be sure to take responsibility for your work!
It will also be imperative for you to prepare and study for tests. The best way to do that is to write test dates in your student planner and take home materials to study with. You will ALWAYS be given at least a one week notice of every test or quiz.
This year, your grades will be very important. They will be factored into the Presidential Award that is given out at the end of 6th grade. Therefore, to be considered for the Gold Award for Academic Excellence, you must earn all A’s (A- included), as well as, no less than an “S” in specials. To be considered for the Silver Award for Academic Excellence, you must earn at least two A’s (A- included), and no less than a B- in all major subjects, as well as, no less than an “S” in specials.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning with you. We still get excited about meeting a new group of students! We’ll be spending some time settling in and becoming a learning community, but once we get started, we know it’s going to be a great year.
A special note for parents: Back to School Night will take place on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 7:00PM. We anticipate reviewing the key components of fifth grade so that you may be aware of how to best prepare and help your child throughout the year. If any questions or concerns should arise throughout the school year, it is important to keep communication ongoing. Therefore, the best way to contact us is through either e-mail or by leaving a message. However, please keep in mind that we will not be able to check phone messages until the end of the day. Therefore, if you must call the school regarding any emergency or changes in dismissal, you must contact the main office.
